Chapter 9

Riot

“I told you… Papa Pain don’t play.” The giant brick wall of a man was already grinding his fist into his opposite palm.

Greasing his knuckles for my face.

Fuck.

I stood tall, nose to nose with him.

Papa Pain narrowed his eyes, broadening his stance.

Double fuck.

“Listen, you slimy little punk bitch. You’re not good enough for my niece. What do I gotta do to get that fact through your stupid fucking skull?” Papa’s hand was close to making contact with my jugular before I ducked and dodged, swift on my feet since I’d been sparring with Grizz, another fighter at Dominant Alpha.

Papa’s eyes rose, arms crossing his chest as his thick inked forearms rippled with brute strength. “Who taught you that footwork? You been workin’ with Grizz?”

“Little bit.”

His eyes were shrewd, assessing my form slowly.

“Get that roundhouse worked out, and you may just have a chance for the weekend brawl.” He shook his head, invading my space and this time not stopping until our chests were pressed together. “I’m gonna put you against my best fighter though.” His voice lowered to a threatening growl. “Maybe if you pull this match off, I’ll think a little differently about you and my niece. Don’t disappoint me, Riot.”

My own fists worked back and forth, adrenaline and anxiety spiking in my system with the urge to pummel his face. I’d do it to any other man who dared to get so fucking close, but Papa Pain was different.

He was Laura’s uncle.

And I was on his shit list.

“But don’t be a fool…punk.” Papa grunted once, cocking his fist back and throwing a quick punch that stopped inches from my shoulder. If he hadn’t stopped, with the force of his heavy arm, he would have shattered my clavicle and it would have grounded me for good.

I huffed once he was out of my space, rubbing at a phantom wound in that same place from a lifetime ago someone else had lodged their fist there and fractured bones.

I hovered awkwardly in the dim hallway as Faith pressed a kiss on her uncle’s cheek before walking him out the door. My heart thundered as I thought about every damn bad decision I’d made and how this was probably another one. Involving Faith in this lifestyle any more than she already was… Well, she’d only just gotten free of it, it felt like.

Her life was so on track. Mine was pathetic. I swung my fists for a living and let other men pulverize my face.

Hell, Maria and Teddy made no joke about the consequences of a life in the business—regular trauma to the skull didn’t play well long-term. But those of us who did it, did it because we loved it, not for anything else.

“Faith—” I choked on her name once she was in earshot.

Her gaze darted to mine, sensing something off.

I swallowed, planting my palms on her shoulders and locking her gaze with mine. “This life isn’t—” I frowned, trying to get my words together. “I’m not good at things like words and feelings, but what I do know is this life.
